'Allie', played by McAdams is the proper and polished rich girl & the wardrobe selected for her character in the movie was sheer perfection in replicating the swimwear, business wear and casual wear of that era...

The style of the 40's is easy to pull off for your own self, if that's the time period of fashion styles that tickles your fancy.  Anything floral and flouncy, with muted hues will suffice.
